One City, Four Original Settlements
Mishawaka started as four separate settlements before it was one city. The St. Joseph Iron Works, founded in 1831 on nearby bog-iron deposits, anchored the earliest development; by 1833 it had combined with Indiana City and two adjacent towns to incorporate as Mishawaka. A September 1872 fire then destroyed three-quarters of the young city's business district before it rebuilt around new industry.
Settlement Patterns From Two Building Eras
Foundation work in Mishawaka has to account for two different building eras: the tight, close-set lots platted when the St. Joseph Iron Works and its neighbors merged into the city in 1833, and the industrial-era rebuild that followed the 1872 fire. Settlement patterns differ block to block between those older, denser foundations near downtown and the looser soil conditions further out toward the newer parks and additions.
