Elkhart's path from river-junction settlement to industrial hub took decades. Laid out in 1832 near where the St. Joseph and Elkhart rivers meet, the town's growth accelerated around 1870 when railway repair shops arrived and made it a division point on the New York Central Railroad.
Two Growth Eras, Two Soil Stories
Foundations in Elkhart's older railroad-district neighborhoods, built up after the railway shops arrived around 1870, sit on ground shaped by the town's original river-confluence location -- different settlement conditions than the newer housing that expanded outward during the mid-20th-century trailer and RV manufacturing boom that began with Milo Miller's 1931 trailer.
